Bipolar Depression In Relationships The effect of bipolar depression on sufferers and a the people who care for them can be great putting enormous pressures on relationships. Help for the sufferer and the people who care and support them is availlable. Read on to find out more about this condition and how I can help both the people with Bipolar depression and the people who love and support them. What is Bipolar Depression? Bipolar depression is a specific type of depression that is characterised by both high and low moods and in some cases auditory and or visual hallucinations. This condition tends to effect woman more than men and often begins in the late teens and early twenties. Approximately 30% of people who have been diagnosed with depression also suffer with some form of bipolar depression. Bipolar depression has a strong genetic component. The effect of this condition on the sufferer and their relationships can be great but with help and the right approach many of these problems can be managed. What are the symptoms of Bipolar depression? There are a number of symptoms that characterise Bipolar depression. Typically the sufferer will have both very high and very low moods. When the person with bipolar depression is in the low phase of the condition those symptoms include many of the normal symptoms of depression (follow this link to read about the symptoms of depression). However when the person with Bipolar Depression is in the low phase of the condition their symptoms may be extreme. When the person suffering with bipolar depression is experiencing the high side of the condition their mood is inappropriately raised often euphoric. The down side of Bipolar Depression is very down. As in the case of depression in general people suffering bipolar depression will have all of the typical mental, emotional, physical, behavioural and social symptoms of depression (See Depression for more information on The Symptoms of Depression). However the lows that these people experience are often severe while the highs can be extreme. These are only some of the symptoms that sufferers of bipolar depression. If you believe that you or someone you know is suffering from bipolar depression it is essential that you or they get an assessment by a qualified health care professional. The Treatment of Bipolar Depression Because of the strong genetic component of Bipolar depression anti-depressant and anti-psychotic depression are often important in the treatment of this condition. Psychotherapy is also important. Often the high or low episodes of Bipolar depression are triggered by critical event, stress, traumas and other distressing events. Psychotherapy can help by reducing the sufferers experience of stress and by enabling them to more effectively manage stress. As always the most important part of the process of treating Bipolar depression is to accurately assess it and to formulate a comprehensive treatment plan that includes mental, emotional, physical behavioural and social interventions.
